Roger Hunt respects paid outside Anfield ahead of funeral for Liverpool legend

The city of Liverpool will today remember former Reds striker Roger Hunt

The hearse carrying the body of Roger Hunt paused outside Anfield this morning as a mark of respect for the Liverpool legend.

Hunt, who is the second-highest scorer in Reds history with 285 goals, passed away at the age of 83 last month.

Fans gathered outside Anfield with a 'Sir Roger' banner to pay tribute to the great goalscorer and applauded as the hearse paused outside the Kop.

Hunt signed for Liverpool in July 1958 and made his final appearance for the club in December 1969.

During his time with the Reds, the former striker helped the club claim the First Division title on two occasions, one Second Division title, one FA Cup and three Charity Shields.

He was also part of the England side who won the 1966 World Cup, playing in all six games at the tournament and scoring three goals.

Discussing the legacy of Hunt in an interview with liverpoolfc.com last month, Jurgen Klopp said: "Roger Hunt comes second to no-one in his importance in the history of Liverpool FC, that much is clear.

“To be the goalscoring catalyst of the Shankly team to actually achieve promotion and then go on to win those precious league titles and the FA Cup puts him in a bracket of LFC legends who are responsible for making us the club we are today. Not only that, he was also a World Cup winner in 1966, too.

“I am told the Kop christened him 'Sir Roger' for all his achievements. A goalscorer who never stopped working to help his teammates; I believe he would have fit in well within our current team.

“So, it is Sir Roger we will remember, honour and pay tribute to over the coming days.

“You’ll Never Walk Alone.”

The service for his funeral will take place at Liverpool Cathedral later this morning at 11am.

There will be tributes from Anfield legends Ian Callaghan and Kevin Keegan, a reading from Gordon Milne and an address from Liverpool club chaplain Bill Bygroves.
