News coming out of Italy suggests that former AC Milan, Rangers and Italy midfielder Gennaro Gattuso would accept a short-term role at Newcastle if the club offer the fiery character a chance to replace Steve Bruce.

According to Italian Journalist, Fabio Santini, the former Napoli manager would be willing to take a short-term deal at St James' Park as the search for a new Newcastle manager continues.

"Attention: there is a sensational twist for what concerns Gennaro Gattuso. The coach could land in the Premier League, at Newcastle," said Santini, as reported by Sport Witness.

"The Calabrian coach would also accept a fixed term contract until the end of the current football season."

Gattuso has not been one of the names heavily linked with the job, with another boss who has most recently managed in Italy, Paulo Fonseca, having held talks with the Magpies.

However, on Twitter one Magpies fan stated that Gattuso's disciplinarian style could be exactly what the Magpies need as @SteveMckenna_ said 'he'd be a nightmare for our sloppy midfielders. Get him in'.

Meanwhile, @Peltsysmb said 'he'd be passionate if nothing else'.

Another fan @JakeJackmann noted the similarities between targets in Tottenham Hotspur's summer manager hunt.

"Conte, Fonseca and now Gattuso...can we fast forward to the point where we appoint Nuno? Seems we are on the Tottenham managerial highway."

However, there are other fans who would see Gattuso as the opposite of the kind of exciting appointment they were hoping for, as the Italian isn't known for his attacking football. On Twitter another fan with the handle 'Lucky' simply wrote: "Gattuso, please no."
