Graeme Jones drops hint about Newcastle United's next move for a head coach

Newcastle face Chelsea searching for their first win of the season but the odds are stacked against them

Graeme Jones has been placed in charge of Newcastle United on an interim basis.

Graeme Jones has suggested that he is guaranteed to be assistant manager at least at Newcastle United - regardless of who is appointed as head coach.

Jones made several references to the 'new manager' during his 26-minute long briefing with the media via a Zoom call.

The impression Jones gave to journalists was that the situation will be resolved sooner rather than later.

Jones said: "I have been assured of my future at the football club so that won't change for me. Whether I am manager or assistant, I will be studying Brighton.

"If I was in that position or an assistant manager you are fully focused on the Chelsea game, you then refresh on Sunday and start work on Monday and prepare the best you can.

"The way I am as a person I am curious and you want to have an opinion. You can only have an opinion if you watch your own team and your opponent in detail.

"As a manager, you have extra responsibility with media and players but in terms of preparation that won't change no matter what role I am given."

When asked if he had spoken to Amanda Staveley and the new owners this week, Jones said: "Yeah I have. I saw them yesterday. Nothing more was said apart from my remit is the Chelsea game.

"Nothing had changed on that front. I am just preparing the team and I know that is boring but that is where we are as a football club.

"Between now and January 1 will define our season. It would be amiss of me to focus on anything else."

Newcastle face Chelsea on the back of a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace but the odds are stacked against them to get anything from the home clash with the Blues.

Jones indicated he would learn more about the next step with owners after the game.

Jones said: "I will have a chat with the owners and see where we are. Our job is to make this as united a football club as we can be for the next manager coming in.

"I would like to present the new manager with as many points as we can. I want him to come into a united football club. We want to be able to help the new manager."
