Newcastle United interim boss Graeme Jones has laid out the training plans for the week ahead as he tries to lift spirits following a bruising weekend.

The managerial search was described as "ongoing" by those close to the club but there is also an expectation from within that Jones could be in the dugout for the Brighton game which would then give Newcastle more time during the international break to assess their options.


Although, external noise is building to install a new manager with legend Alan Shearer leading the call for change over the weekend by suggesting a fresh face is needed "sharpish" as the club slipped further into trouble.

Not only were the Magpies beaten 3-0 at home to Chelsea but the agony was compounded by Leeds United's 2-1 victory at Norwich City which put a six-point gap between themselves and the black and whites.

Tottenham Hotspur have parted company with Nuno Espirito Santo according to capital reports this morning.

And the fact that they are in the hunt for a new head coach, with Newcastle candidate Paul Fonseca back in the frame for the Londoners, merely complicating United's managerial search.

Roberto Martinez is another candidate who has been linked with the Spurs job in the last year or so.

United were still carefully assessing their options over the weekend with Jones and his back-room team of Steve Agnew, Stephen Clemence and Ben Dawson getting on with the job of planning for the days ahead.


Speaking after the game, Jones said: "For 65 minutes we had really consistent behaviour.

"I need to look back on the game, was it a concentration thing, and see whether it was a mental thing or physical thing?

"From that point of the game, we need to face it like men and stick together."

United are set for another five-day week after Jones scrapped the midweek day off which had been in place under the previous regime.
