Sergio Aguero ruled out for three months as Barcelona star treated after breathing issue

Barcelona will be without star striker Sergio Aguero until February 2022 while he is monitored after being taking to hospital with chest pains during the La Liga match with Alaves

Sergio Aguero has been ruled out for three months after being taken to hospital with breathing difficulties and chest pains midway through Barcelona's game with Alaves on Saturday.

The former Manchester City forward was withdrawn before half-time after receiving treatment for several minutes in the match at the Nou Camp.

He later underwent cardiac tests at a local hospital as a precautionary measure after departing the ground in an ambulance.

Spanish press reported that the Argentine was 'diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat'.

Now Barcelona have revealed that the 33-year-old is set for an extended spell on the sidelines while he is monitored by medics.

The Catalan giants released a statement which said: "Barca player Kun Aguero has been subjected to a diagnostic and therapeutic process by Dr. Josep Brugada.

"He is unavailable for selection and, during the next three months, the effectiveness of treatment will be evaluated in order to determine his recovery process.

"The Argentine was taken to hospital for cardiological evaluation on Saturday following the Barca v Alaves game in which the Barça striker felt unwell in the first half and was replaced before half time by Philippe Coutinho."

Aguero fell to the pitch and required treatment after he was seen clutching his chest. He is also reported to have been suffering from a high heart rate.

The veteran forward did not require the stretcher that was brought on for him and was able to walk off under his own steam.

Sergi Berjuan, Barcelona's interim manager until Ronaldo Koeman's successor is found, recalled the moment he spoke to Aguero after he was substituted.

"I asked him and he told me he was dizzy," said Barjuan of Aguero. "I was told he went to the hospital. I don’t know anything else."

Aguero was making just his fifth appearance for the La Liga club having missed the start of the campaign with a calf injury.

He will now be out until at least February 2022.
