Aston Villa fans' patience with Dean Smith is close to breaking point after their team suffered a fifth straight defeat in the Premier League at Southampton.

Adam Armstrong's early goal was enough to seal all three points for the hosts, sparking plenty of fury on social media.

Smith is under huge pressure after a shocking run of form that has seen them lose to Southampton, West Ham and Arsenal in recent weeks.

And the fans were far from happy with what they witnessed from Villa against the Saints, despite a much-improved second-half performance.

Here's what Villa fans had to say on Twitter...

Cial Northall: "I’m not sure what Smith can do here to change what’s happening. The players just aren’t playing well."

BZP: "Where's the runners? Where's the movement off the ball? Getting in behind the lines? There's zero movement, pace or energy. It's dismal, apathetic and down right shameful. Last-minute defending. No one has been above a 4/10. Disgraceful."

Michael Lomax: "What is the manager doing on the training pitch and what is the recruitment like? Just embarrassing."

Sean Logue : "Results are bad. Performances indefensible."

Durenzo: "It doesn't seem like Smith actually knows what he wants to play. The tactics change every game."

AVFC Faithful: "Can’t get away with turning up for 45 mins every week."

Rob Hepburn: "Dean Smith deserves the chance to turn this around after everything he’s done for us, he’s one of us and I’ll back him everyday of the week. Keep the faith. Up the Villa."

Jake Phillips: "I really wanted Smith to succeed in the long run, but if we have the ambition, we have to get rid, unfortunately. I'd love him to take us to the next level, but its not looking good at the minute."

James Andrew Toghill: "Substitutions were awful, I know they're young but Archer, Ramsey and Davies were awful when they came on and offered nothing. That left-hand side in the second half was tough to watch, just don't see where we're going to create goals right now."
