Jay-Jay Okocha confirmed and Bolton Wanderers legends to play in Gethin Jones fundraising game

The legendary midfielder has been confirmed for this weekend's All Star match

Jay-Jay Okocha has become the latest legendary former Bolton player who will once again don a Wanderers shirt for this weekend's fundraising match in aid of current player Gethin Jones' mother.


Sam Allardyce will take charge of a team of former players to take on the current Wanderers squad at the University of Bolton Stadium on Sunday, November 14, for a 1pm kick-off.


Kevin Davies and John McGinlay have been working behind the scenes to get a team together which will help to raise funds to go towards treatment and care for Karen, the mother of Wanderers’ defender Jones, who has been diagnosed with MND.

And taking to Twitter, Davies confirmed that Okocha and his son Ajay will be among the Wanderers legends taking part in the game.

He wrote: "Hope all you @OfficialBWFC have bought your tickets for @GethinJones8 match on Sunday. Just wanted to announce a new signing for the Legends team. This player was so good they named him twice!! Welcome to the team @IAmOkocha and also his son Ajay."

Davies, Henrik Pedersen, Ricardo Gardner, Stelios Giannakopoulos and goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen will all be playing, as will Gudni Bergsson, midfield maestro Alan Thompson and wing wizard David Lee are also set to put their boots back on for the encounter.

Jones took to Twitter himself to respond to the news that Okocha will be playing.

He wrote: "I can’t thank everyone enough for your support so far. This is going to be a very special occasion. To the Club, the staff, players (current & past), celebrities & the fans… THANK YOU AGAIN."

Okocha scored 18 goals in 144 games for Wanderers between 2002 and 2006 and became one of the club's true legends with a spell in a team that also included the likes of Ivan Campo, Fernando Hierro and Youri Djorkaeff.
