Former New York Red Bulls manager and US men's national team international Chris Armas is being lined up to join Ralf Rangnick's backroom staff at Manchester United.

The German got off to a winning start with the Reds after Fred's goal against Crystal Palace.

The Manchester Evening News understands United are interested in hiring the 49-year-old Armas as Rangnick looks to bolster his coaching options.

It looks set to rekindle a relationship that was formed previously at the Red Bull franchise that sees Leipzig, Salzburg, New York and Bragantino under its footballing umbrella.

Who is Chris Armas?

Armas is a 49-year-old American who enjoyed a playing career spanning over 250 in the Major League Soccer (MLS) in the US.

He prominently featured for Chicago Fire and spent nine years in Illinois before joining the coaching staff at the Fire.

In his management career, he spent three years as the Adelphi Panthers women's manager before joining the RB franchise in 2015 where he first undertook an assistant's role before becoming the permanent manager in 2018.

During his first season at the helm, he won the Supporters' Shield which is for the best regular-season record in the MLS but they lost in the conference finals to Atalanta United.

More recently, he was in charge of Toronto FC but lasted a matter of months and was sacked following a 7-1 defeat to DC United.

How does Ralf Rangnick know Armas?

Rangnick worked alongside the New York-born coach during his time as the head of sport and development for Red Bull GmbH in 2019.

The pair spent a year together before the German resigned and joined Lokomotiv Moscow - prior to his United switch.

What has Rangnick said about coaching staff additions?

The interim boss admitted that it would be difficult to make wholesale changes with many of his previous colleagues in full-time positions with their respective clubs.

He said: "I will obviously try to find one, two, maybe three people who can join us in the one or two weeks but due to the Brexit regulations it's not too easy.

"Many of my former colleagues, no matter if it is video analysts or assistant coaches are in long-term contracts with big clubs so they are not available right now and we have to be a bit smart and clever and find the right people.

"I hope that we can get them in here in the next one or two weeks, but I cannot tell you any names.”
