Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson has had a stop-start beginning to his career at Villa Park.

Sanson has only started back-to-back games once since his £14 million move from Marseille in January.

The Frenchman has been out with injury and illness, suffering hamstring and knee injuries but he is on the comeback trail and managed 33 minutes in Saturday's 1-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

There is hope that Sanson can establish himself as a Villa regular under Steven Gerrard and use the experience of playing for a team at the top of the French League and in the Champions League.

Sanson has played Villa's last three matches and Gerrard's man-management of the midfielder helped integrate him back into the first team setup, naming the player on the substitute's bench for the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.

"I am very happy to be back. I am feeling much better every day so I’m really happy," Sanson said after the Liverpool game.

Villa were beaten by a Mohamed Salah penalty, conceded by Tyrone Mings.

Gerrard 's side have only lost two of his five games in charge so far, to Liverpool and Manchester City.

“It was a defeat but there were a lot of positive things in the game, especially in the second half, we did some things well," Sanson added.

“They scored a penalty and of course we are sad but we will learn and bounce back. We will use this game and mistake to come back."

Gerrard outlined his plan for Sanson when he discussed, in detail, the Frenchman's situation.

"I've sat down with Morgan face-to-face and said let's get you upto speed from a physical and mental point of view the best way we can so you're ready and there will be opportunities for him," Gerrard said.

"We certainly know his quality. We know he can help us and it's very much a clean slate for him and everyone else as well."
