Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe called up a host of Under-23 players to training at Benton in the build-up to the clash with Leeds United - including Santiago Munoz and Rodrigo Vilca.

The Mexican striker, on loan from Santos Laguna for another 12 months, trained at the senior end of the club's training centre while Vilca, back from a loan spell at Doncaster Rovers, was also handed a chance to impress.

Newcastle have also recalled winger Tom Allan from Greenock Morton after a dozen appearances north of the border and the 22-year-old also trained with the first-team.

Others on show were midfielder Jack Young, defender Matty Bondswell and striker Kyle Crossley.

It has also emerged that goalkeeper Jake Turner is back from a loan spell with Colchester United - suggesting there could be potential movement for Freddie Woodman this month.

Colchester director of football Tony Humes told cu-fc.com: "Jake's done extremely well for us and we are all disappointed he's not staying longer."

"We were working with Newcastle to extend it further until the end of the season, but they refused to work with us on it and Jake has had to head back up there.

"We'd like to thank Jake for his contribution and hard work here over the past few months and wish him all the best in his future football career, which we're sure will be bright."
