Dejan Lovren posts cryptic response to Mohamed Salah Liverpool contract question

Dejan Lovren formed a close friendship with Mohamed Salah during their three years together at Liverpool

Former Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has provided a cryptic response when asked if Mohamed Salah is going to sign a new contract with his old club.

Lovren, who left the Reds in 2020 when he moved to Zenit St Petersburg, formed a close friendship with Salah during their three years together on Merseyside.

Salah has been in fine form for Liverpool this season, scoring 23 times in 26 appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's side.

The ECHO understands that negotiations are ongoing between the forward's representatives and the club, with Salah in the final two years of his current deal that was signed in 2018.

Liverpool are keen to reward Salah for his continued outstanding contribution since arriving from Roma for £43.9million in the summer of 2017.

The Reds have extended the contracts of several players in recent months, but Salah is yet to put pen-to-paper on a new deal unlike many of his team-mates.

And when asked during a Twitter Q&A when Salah would sign a new contract with Liverpool, Lovren simply replied with two zipped mouth emojis.

Lovren also offered his thoughts on the 'disrespect towards' Salah when it comes to 'major awards', saying: 'Not surprised. But that’s life, we move on. He knows that.'

The Croatia international also named Virgil van Dijk as the best defender he played with at Liverpool, and the win over Borussia Dortmund as his best moment.

The Reds staged one of the most dramatic comebacks Anfield has seen to overcome the German side in the Europa League six-years ago.

Klopp's side were twice left needing three goals to go through before Lovren headed home his side’s winning goal in stoppage time.

While Lovren also refused to separate Trent Alexander-Arnold and Andy Robertson when asked who is better, and refused to rule out going into coaching once he retires.

The centre-back also named Romelu Lukaku as the strongest player he's faced, and picked Cristiano Ronaldo over Lionel Messi, and branded Philippe Coutinho's decision to move to Aston Villa as a 'great' one when asked his thoughts on the transfer.

Lovren and Salah won the Champions League and Premier League together in 2019 and 2020 respectively, before the Croatian moved on to pastures new.
