Senegal saw off the threat of giantkillers Equatorial Guinea and won 3-1 in their Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final on Sunday to advance to the final four of the tournament in Cameroon.
Famara Diedhiou opened the scoring for Senegal, who then conceded a surprise equaliser to Jannick Buyla, only for substitutes Cheikhou Kouyate and Ismaila Sarr to come on and restore Senegal’s lead and put the result beyond doubt.
Senegal, one of the pre-tournament favourites, have booked a semi-final meeting with Burkina Faso on Wednesday.

Sadio Mane and his Senegal team-mates celebrate reaching the AFCON semi-finals

Ismaila Sarr scored the final goal of an entertaining game to clinch a 3-1 victory for Senegal

Famara Diedhiou put Senegal ahead in the first half following a lovely pass from Sadio Mane
Earlier on Sunday in the first of two matches at the Ahmadou Ahidjou Stadium, Egypt edged Morocco 2-1 after extra time and will play hosts Cameroon in the other semi-final on Thursday.
Diedhiou was first onto the scoresheet at the end of a defence-splitting pass from Sadio Mane after 28 minutes, outsprinting the defence and hitting home with a first time effort with his left foot,
It looked as if it might open the floodgates in a mismatch between Africa’s top ranked team and a Equatorial Guinea side, who are 96 places beneath them in the FIFA rankings.
But Senegal were unable to add any more goals despite dominating the first half and then found themselves in a sticky situation five minutes after the resumption.
They had a penalty awarded against them when a pass from Iban Salvador struck captain Kalildou Koulibaly on the hand but after reviewing his decision on the pitch side VAR screen, referee Victor Gomes changed his mind.

Equatorial Guinea striker Jannick Buyla celebrates grabbing an unlikely equaliser

Cheikhou Kouyate put Senegal back in front just moments after coming off the bench
Koulibaly was struck on the hand but at close range and without his hand being away from his body.
Despite the disappointment of not getting a spot-kick, Equatorial Guinea came storming forward and an interchange of passes on the edge of the area allowed Buyla to stab home a 57th minute equaliser.
They had already beaten defending champions Algeria, Sierra Leone and Mali in their previous matches and looked for yet another major scalp.
But parity lasted less than 10 minutes as Kouyate restored his side’s lead, three minutes after coming on in the 65th minute.
A mix-up in the Equatorial Guinea defence saw the two centre backs challenge for the same high ball, spilling it backwards where Kouyate cleverly stole in and lifted the ball over goalkeeper Jesus Owono.

Kouyate's goal killed off Equatorial Guinea's hopes of another shock after knocking out Algeria

Senegal are Africa's top-ranked team at the moment but have never won the AFCON before
Senegal made sure of the result when Sarr had a easy tap-in in the 79th minute. He had come on for his first appearance of the tournament and immediately took a hold of the ball, dominating the later stages of the contest.
It was his first game since a serious knee injury playing for Watford against Manchester United in November and after a tug-of-war over his availability between club and country.

Equatorial Guinea played their part but in the end Senegal earned a comprehensive win and the gulf in class shone through. Senegal will play Burkina Faso in the semi-finals on Wednesday. If they win, they will meet either Egypt or hosts Cameroon in the final on February 6.
Game, set, match. Ismaila Sarr taps in a low cross from Ciss following a long diagonal ball from Koulibaly
Cheikhou Kouyate restores Senegal's lead just three minutes after coming off the bench. The Crystal Palace man reacts quickly to nip in and beat Owono after some horrific defending from Equatorial Guinea, who create danger from themselves out of nothing.
Now the minnows have the initiative and are so close to levelling. Akapo sends an inviting cross in from the right which flies across the box and Emilio Nsue is inches away from connecting with it.
Equatorial Guinea brush off the disappointment of the penalty being overturned and craft a beautiful move to equalise, Jannick Buyla poking into the bottom corner after taking one touch to bring the ball under control
Referee Victor Gomes changes his mind after being encouraged by the VAR officials to review the incident. Equatorial Guinea are perplexed and continue to protest even as play resumes
What an incredible chance for the minnows. Koulibaly handles a cross from Iban Edu and the referee points to the spot although he is going to have a look at the monitor.
Equatorial Guinea get the second period underway. They have little choice after a timid first half to come out and take a few risks to try to get on level terms.
But Iban Edu fires straight into the wall. He optimistically appeals for a handball but the referee isn't listening.
Senegal are really showing their class now after a slow start and Equatorial Guinea are in desperate need of some respite. They could really do with getting to the break only a goal down.
Papy Mendy has a strike from outside the box and Jesus Owono is forced into a quick reaction save. The goalkeeper eventually gathers the ball after parrying the shot.
Two chances in quick succession for Senegal since scoring. Mane tears down the left wing on the break but he can't find a team-mate in the area and Equatorial Guinea scramble the ball away.
It may have been a superb move from Senegal but Equatorial Guinea will be fuming that the goal came from a foul throw. Carlos Akapo went to take the throw-in but the ball slipped from his hands and a foul throw was given. Senegal then took their time to craft the sweeping move from which Diédhiou struck the opener, his first goal in the tournament.
Famara Diedhiou slots in a perfectly weighted pass from Sadio Mane to give Senegal the lead. It was the favourites' first real chance of the game and striker Diedhiou took it with real confidence, needing only one touch to find the net.
Senegal get a free-kick in decent range and Idrissa Gueye takes it ahead of Mane. The PSG man is nowhere near hitting the target though. Perhaps Mane will insist on taking their next attempt.
Saliou Ciss is the first player to get his name in the book. Ciss went up for a header and appeared to win the ball but was penalised for leaning on his opponent.
Equatorial Guinea have the first attempt at goal as Iban Edu tries his luck from long range and his shot goes flying over the bar. Edouard Mendy barely blinked but if nothing else it's an early demonstration that Equatorial Guinea are not afraid to have a go against the tournament favourites.
This quarter-final is a meeting of the two best defences in the tournament, having conceded only one goal between them in their eight games. Senegal have kept four consecutive clean sheets while Equatorial Guinea haven't let a goal in for more than 300 minutes, since they were beaten 1-0 by Ivory Coast in their opening game
Not quite a full house at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium but a lively atmosphere as kick off nears
There's considerably less stardust in the Equatorial Guinea line-up but goalkeeper Jesus Owono made a name for himself in the shoot-out win over Mali with his spectacular cartwheel celebration after his side clinched a 6-5 victory.
They line up as follows: Owono, Akapo, Ndong, Ganet, Obiang Coco, Salvador, Machin, Nsue Miranda, Buyla
As predicted, Sadio Mane starts for Senegal only five days after being hospitalised with a head injury sustained in the last-16 win over Cape Verde.
There's a heavy Premier League presence in the Senegal starting 11, with Chelsea's Edouard Mendy and Leicester's Papy Mendy also in the team
