Rangers star James Sands can become better player amid Old Firm rivalry, says ex-Celtic boss Ronny Deila

RONNY DEILA reckons the pressure of the Old Firm rivalry will help James Sands become an even better player.

The Rangers star is adapting to life in Scottish football after making the move from MLS side New York City last month.

And former Celtic manager Deila has no doubts the 21-year-old has what it takes to succeed in our game.

Sands played under the Norwegian manager at City and was part of the team that won the club's first MLS Cup in the 2021 campaign.

Now, Deila has opened up about the Rangers ace as he admits he was the man he wanted every other player to look up to.

However, he joked he still hopes Celtic triumph over his old player's new club.

Speaking on the Coaching Academy podcast, Deila said: “Last year, the one role model I wanted every player at the club to look up to was James Sands.

“He was also first in the facility, he always did the most in the gym, he’s the latest to leave. He always does everything perfect.

“He wants to learn and everyday goes 100 percent. When those type of players get what they want, that’s just an amazing feeling as a coach.

“So that’s why I’m really, really happy for James. And when you leave having won, then that’s something I respect.

“But it’s going to be tough for him in Scotland because he’s jumping to another level - maybe not football wise so much better, I don’t think so.

“But the pressure and the environment, moving away from New York and his family and into an environment where 50 percent of the city hates you and 50 percent loves you - and that’s only when you’re playing well!

“That’s a new experience for him and at the age of 21 that’s going to make him a better player.

"But you have to suffer sometimes in life to get what you want.

“But James knows how to act and to think during this period and he just has to get better. Then he will break into the team.

“So we will see - but I’m still a Celtic fan, I can tell you that!”
