Barnet joke ‘Mr Bumble’s on the mend’ with hilarious snap of mascot having MRI scan after attack by Wealdstone fans

BARNET’S mascot Mr Bumble is recovering from a stinger after being attacked by Wealdstone fans at the weekend.

The Bees went down 3-1 to the Royals at their home ground The Hive on Saturday in the National League – but it is off the pitch where they took the biggest hit.

Barnet have complained to the league with reports of several accounts of antisocial behaviour, racial abuse and criminal damage from the visiting fans that led to numerous arrests.

Included within that was “a bottle and two other pieces of plastic” thrown at Mr Bumble before kick-off.

Barnet have made light of that particular incident, posting a picture of the mascot having an MRI scan of the injury on Twitter.

The caption read: “We can confirm that Mr Bumble is on the mend! #JusticeForMrBumble.”

The rest of the incidents were far more serious, such as racial abuse and violence towards stewards, smashed and flooded toilets, ripped ceiling tiles leaving potential electrical fire hazards, the igniting of four pyrotechnics and broken or missing stadium seats.

A Barnet statement read: “It’s a sad day in football.

“What should have been a great day for Wealdstone FC has been marred by a handful of supporters who have behaved in a disgraceful manner, the likes of which we as a club have not seen before.

“There were multiple ejections and arrests for the above and charges for criminal damage and criminal charges under football legislation were served.”

A nine-page report on the incidents have been sent to Wealdstone, and the club’s chairman Roy Fitzgerald responded with an apologetic statement.

It read: “Reports of criminal damage and antisocial behaviour have been bought to our attention from the game and this is not something the club condones in any way.

“The incidents are being dealt with by both clubs and the police, anyone found to be associated with this behaviour will be sanctioned accordingly.

“We will absolutely NOT tolerate a small minority of people who associated themselves with our club for this fixture to tarnish our reputation.”
