'Keeps breaking down' - Ex-Liverpool star Daniel Sturridge suffers fresh setback at Perth Glory

Daniel Sturridge left Liverpool in 2019 after six years spent at Anfield as a player

Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has suffered another setback at Perth Glory after sustaining an injury just 18 minutes after being deployed as a second-half substitute.

The 32-year-old was signed by the Australian first-division side in October, which was described as 'one of the biggest signings in A-League history' by Glory owner Tony Sage.

But since joining the club, Sturridge has only been deployed as a substitute and has not featured for longer than 30 minutes in each of his outings.

The 2019 Champions League winner ruled himself out of a league match in November due to feeling 'crampy' following a four-hour flight to travel to the home of Western United and is now set for a spell on the sidelines after pulling up clutching his groin during a 1-0 defeat to Macarthur on Wednesday.

“I keep trying to bring him back and he keeps breaking down,” Glory coach Richard Garcia said after the match.

“We’ve got to get to grips with it and find out where he’s at. He keeps getting to certain stage. We’ll have to wait and see how this one turns up. Hopefully it’s nothing.

“We had him in at half-time, and then he did it so quickly that maybe he didn’t have enough time to warm up,” added Garcia.

“He’s disappointed. We’ve got to take a look at it. Hopefully, it’s not as bad as it felt. He’s a pretty strong guy. He’s had these injuries before. It’s just about him coming back from it.”

Sturridge is under contract at Perth until the end of the current campaign and will be eager to transform his side's fortunes in the coming months.

The Glory have won three of their opening ten league matches, scoring just nine times during this period.
