Wigan 0-3 Sunderland player ratings as Patterson, Wright, Pritchard and Stewart all impress

Ross Stewart scored two penalties after Bailey Wright had set Sunderland on their way to victory at the DW Stadium

Sunderland ended their six-game winless streak with an excellent victory at promotion-chasing Wigan Athletic.


Bailey Wright headed them in front inside the first couple of minutes, before Ross Stewart doubled their lead from the penalty spot before half-time.


And Stewart added a second goal from the penalty spot in the final few minutes to wrap up the points.

It was the first win of Alex Neil's reign and it lifted the Black Cats to fifth place in the table.

Made one excellent save from Lang in the second half, and looked secure throughout

Robust at right-back, he had a very solid game

Bailey Wright 8

Strong at the back, his early goal gave Sunderland the perfect start

Outstanding considering this was his first league game in England - and he will get better the more games he plays

Did a decent job at left-back, and looked to have more energy than in recent games

Won plenty of ball in the middle of the park


Corry Evans 7

Anchored the midfield and was prepared to put his body on the line

Lynden Gooch 7

Lively, and caused Wigan problems down the right

Alex Pritchard 8

His free-kick led to the first goal and he was Sunderland's dangerman throughout


Elliot Embleton 7

A willing runner wide on the left

Ross Stewart 8

Led the line well, showed good composure to convert two penalties, and he won the first spot-kick
