Former Wales forward and coach John Toshack is in intensive care in a Barcelona hospital.
Toshack has been in the hospital since last week for the treatment of pneumonia that stemmed from a Covid-19 infection. Reports said the 72-year-old Toshack is on a ventilator.
Toshack played for Wales, Cardiff City, Liverpool and Swansea City during a 19-year playing career, helping Liverpool win the European Cup in 1977 and 1978 and three English league titles. As player-manager at Swansea he oversaw their rise through the Football League with three promotions in four seasons.
As well as leading Wales, Toshack also had coaching spells in Spain at Real Madrid, Real Sociedad and Deportivo La Coruna. He won the Spanish league title in 1990 with Madrid and the 1987 Copa del Rey with Sociedad. He also coached in Turkey and France.
Liverpool, Real Madrid, Swansea and Cardiff all wished their former striker well in statements on social media on Sunday.
Toshack scored 96 goals for the Merseyside outfit and formed a lethal partnership with Kevin Keegan. Liverpool’s short statement read: “The thoughts of everyone at #LFC are with John Toshack and his family. Keep fighting, John.”
Real posted their own message of support on Twitter, writing: “Real Madrid, its president and its board of directors wish to send a message of support and affection to our dear John Benjamin Toshack, who we send courage and strength to in these moments.”
