VIEWERS were stunned when Sky Sports News were forced to apologise to David Goodwillie - after accidentally calling the shamed footballer a 'racist' instead of a 'rapist'.

The channel addressed a mistake they made earlier in the day and said sorry for confusing a ruling against the former Scotland international.

A civil case ruled in 2017 that Goodwillie and former Dundee United team-mate David Robertson raped Denise Clair after a drunken night out in Bathgate, West Lothian, in 2011.

Yesterday Clyde confirmed the loan signing of the 32-year-old forward from Raith until the end of the season and were also met with huge criticism.

After the on-air error, a Sky Sports News presenter said: “We would like to issue an apology to Mr Goodwillie.

“A little earlier this evening, in error, we reported that he had been ruled to be a racist in a civil case in 2017.

“The ruling in question was actually that Goodwillie was ruled to be a rapist in that case.

“We apologise for the error in reporting.”

After the Sky Sports News apology, football fans were quick to comment on the error.

One Twitter user said: “That Sky Sports apology about Goodwillie is something else btw.”

While another added: “Sorry we called you a racist, Mr Goodwillie, we meant *rapist*!" @SkySports absolutely excelling themselves with that apology.”

The striker recently signed for Raith Rovers only to leave the club a few days later after the Kirkcaldy side were hit with a huge backlash from celebrity fans and sponsors.

After signing for Raith, furious director Bill Clark, who is a lifelong Rovers fan, quit his role along with supporter-director Andy Mill.

While celeb supporter Val McDermid said she was ending her association with the club over the incident.

Raith had originally said they were standing by their decision.

But they then backtracked and admitted their mistake after fierce criticism.

In 2017 Lord Armstrong said Denise Clair had been “incapable of giving meaningful consent” after a night out and ordered the pair to pay her £100,000 in damages.

Goodwillie — who also played for Aberdeen, Blackburn Rovers and Ross County — left Plymouth Argyle by mutual consent following the ruling before joining Clyde.

He scored 109 goals in 176 games for the Cumbernauld side and went on to become club captain before leaving only to return almost immediately after public outcry.

Goodwillie is expected to make his switch back to Broadwood permanent in the summer after his loan move.

He could feature for the Bully Wee again as early as this Saturday's fixture against Falkirk.
