Stuart Armstrong insists Scotland vs Ukraine can wait as Southampton star issues touching show of solidarity

Armstrong says football doesn't even bear thinking about while the Russian invasion continues.

Stuart Armstrong has no problem letting football take a back seat as the conflict in Ukraine rages on.

It was reported on Thursday that the Ukrainian FA had asked FIFA for their World Cup playoff with Scotland, due to take place on March 24, to be postponed.

Ukraine is currently under martial law with males between 18-60 unable to leave the country until further notice.

That means a substantial amount of the squad would be unable to travel for the Hampden showdown.

With that in mind and against the backdrop of a war that puts football in the rear-view mirror for now, the SFA look likely to accept any proposal to give Ukraine more time.

And Southampton star Armstrong supports that as he insisted football can take a back seat for now.

He said on Sky Sports: "It's a difficult situation for everyone involved. Our thoughts go out to people in Ukraine at the moment.

"On the outset of the game there are a lot of emotions. It's a unique situation, it's heavily emotionally fuelled and it's difficult."

Armstrong had been due to join up with the Scotland squad who faced Ukraine later this month - before a potential final with either Wales or Austria three days later.

But the three nations involved held crisis talks this week and it's likely none of those three will stand in the way of a postponement.
