Steven Gerrard explains Morgan Sanson decision as Aston Villa struggles continue

Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson has only started two Premier League games this season

Morgan Sanson might be frustrated with his lack of game time this season, but Aston Villa head coach Steven Gerrard has labelled the midfielder as the 'ultimate professional'.

Sanson has started just twice under Gerrard, in games against Chelsea and Manchester United as John McGinn was unavailable for selection for both Premier League matches. He has made five appearances from off the bench since Gerrard took over from Dean Smith in November, while he hadn't kicked a ball in the league under the former Villa head coach before then.

In fact, since Sanson signed for Villa back in January 2021, he is still yet to complete a full league game from start to finish, as he has struggled with injury problems and a lack of match fitness as a result.

Sanson would have been hoping for a clean slate under Gerrard, but the Liverpool legend insists the form of McGinn and Jacob Ramsey has been keeping the 27-year-old out of his first XI.

The Frenchman made his first appearance in four games last weekend, as Villa got back to winning ways with a 2-0 victory over Brighton.

"I certainly agree with the supporters that said his cameo [against Brighton] was positive, we were really happy with the job that he did when he came onto the pitch, he made a big part in helping us get over the line, he used the ball really well and played tough for the team," Gerrard said.

"Morgan is training well, he's been the ultimate professional. I'm certainly aware that he wants more game time so he needs to just continue to do what he's doing.

"He's up against the likes of John McGinn and JJ [Jacob Ramsey] who have arguably been our most consistent players since we've come in the door, so he's aware of the challenge.

"Having said that, we moved John into more of a six position and brought Morgan on and it certainly looked well at the time.

"We're aware that Morgan can certainly be a help to us between now and the end of the season."
