‘Manchester United need a root and branch clear out’ – Ex-Red Devils goalkeeper Mark Bosnich says changes needed NOW as they will not beat Arsenal to top four

Manchester United need a ‘root and branch clear out now’, according to former Red Devils goalkeeper Mark Bosnich.

United crashed out of the Champions League with a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford to Atletico Madrid, losing 2-1 on aggregate.

It will now mean five years without a trophy for the Red Devils and no sign of progress as they face an uphill battle to reach the top four.

Ralf Rangnick is only at the club on an interim basis and they will appoint a new name in the summer, with Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag touted as likely candidates.

Bosnich told talkSPORT Breakfast: “The frustrating thing is that it has been 10 years since Sir Alex [Ferguson] retired and you have to say that every manager that has been there ever since has been undermined in some way.

“Whoever they go for, they’ve got to make a decision that the manager is going to be in total control.

“I know the control Sir Alex had back then scared some people, but they are going to have to trust somebody to go and do it.

“It’s basically back to the drawing board [every time]. You can’t keep sacking managers every two or three seasons.

“There’s no stability whatsoever. They are not that type of club. Some people will turn around and say Chelsea did it in the [Roman] Abramovich era and had a lot of success.

“Right now, they look as far away from success that I’ve seen in a very, very long time.”

Rangnick complained about Atletico Madrid’s time-wasting during the loss at Old Trafford, but United’s performance was below par.

Bosnich believes the performance, and in particular the goal, summed up the Red Devil’s struggles.

He added: “Dalot completely lost Lodi in the box, which is just basic defending. His body shape was all wrong and lost him entirely.

“For a top quality goalkeeper for it to just go past him at the near post, I was disappointed.

“We saw five or ten minutes earlier, Atletico Madrid had a goal disallowed and that was only centimetres offside and in a very similar way when Harry Maguire was being drawn into midfield.

“Obviously he had been told to come into midfield when they were being outnumbered, but if that’s going to occur then that just goes back to a communication problem with Varane.

“He can’t leave a hole in the middle of the defence you can drive a bus through.

“All in all, it sums up everything that is going wrong with Man United so far. That’s five years without a trophy.

“They are going to struggle with Arsenal playing so well and have three games in hand to get into that top four.

“Now is time for a root and branch clear out. Rangnick has been brought in as an interim, has done it at other clubs.

“He will go into a consultancy role and we know there’s some confusion there, but if he’s there to do a job that is to basically appoint a new manager and clear out the players then they have to do it right now.”
