'When I was little I watched Goal' - Santiago Munoz opens up after goalscoring Newcastle debut
Santiago Munoz's mere presence at Newcastle United has left the minds of football writers and social media enthusiasts absolutely boggling about the golden content that a 19-year-old Mexican Under-23 international could yet serve up after his 2021 deadline day move.
Munoz, not Munez, like the fictional character in the Goal movie trilogy doesn't mind comparisons with the 2005 film, starring Kuno Becker, who personally approved the teenager's loan move from Santos Laguna, in fact he hopes that he can be the real life version. Well at St James' Park last night it all felt very real as he caught the attention of Twitter followers and the 793 hardy souls that turned out to see him in action on the hallowed turf.
OK, it wasn't quite as dramatic as the movie, in which Munez wins a penalty against Fulham before leading Newcastle to the Champions League later in the plot, but in terms of a game of football - sandwiched in the middle of what has been a dry international break - fans were treated to something good. Not only did Munoz score on his debut, but he also sparked a comeback win as United roared back from 2-0 down to win the game 4-3.
Newcastle target says he's not keen on transfer after Sunderland hero Simon Mignolet warned him off
Club Brugge star Charles de Ketelaere has admitted he is not keen on a move to Newcastle United after asking former Sunderland stopper Simon Mignolet for advice on the city. The 21-year-old is making waves across Europe with his performances in Belgium and has been tentatively linked with a move to the Magpies this summer.
Newcastle chiefs have started to draw up plans for the upcoming transfer window. But if club scouts did have De Ketelaere on their radar, they may have to rethink after he spoke with fellow countryman and ex-Black Cats goalkeeper Mignolet about a move to the north east.
“The Premier League is the highest you can go. That intensity too. In England, you become a better player. But I want to leave everything open," he said recently while discussing a move away from Club Brugge.
Newcastle United handed contract boost in summer pursuit of Manchester United's Jesse Lingard
Newcastle United have been sent a boost in their pursuit of Manchester United playmaker Jesse Lingard. According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Red Devils have "no intention of opening contract talks with Lingard" despite blocking a January loan move to St. James' Park.
Ralf Rangnick's side blocked Lingard's exit in January, despite the midfielder being keen on the move. Newcastle are expected to be at the front of the pack chasing the England international's signature, but West Ham United are also understood to be keen on a move.
Lingard excelled with David Moyes side on loan last year, and Eddie Howe was hoping Lingard would have a similar affect on the Magpies' Premier League survival bid. Newcastle were priced out of a move for the 29-year-old on Deadline Day with the Red Devils asking for an eye watering loan fee and survival bonuses.
Favre, Conte, Gerrard and what happened next for the six managers linked with Newcastle United
Newcastle United's decision to appoint Eddie Howe as Steve Bruce's successor will go down as a masterstroke from the Magpies new owners if they're able to secure Premier League survival. The Toon made the worst start to a Premier League season in their history - taking 15 games to clock up a win against fellow strugglers Burnley.
Of course, people will point to the January transfer window as one of the main factors behind Newcastle's resurgence, but Howe also deserves massive credit for the Magpies turn around. It's easy to forget it could have been so very different had the Magpies owners got their first choice.
Unai Emery was the surprise name at the top of the Magpies shortlist but a public pursuit marred their approach. We've taken a look at six of the candidates who were linked with the vacant managerial position at Newcastle earlier this season and what they've done since.
Former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew named the favourite for League One job
Former Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew has been named the bookmaker's favourite to seal a return to English football with AFC Wimbledon. The League One outfit parted company with Mark Robinson by mutual consent on Monday following a fifth consecutive defeat.
Pardew is currently operating as technical director with Bulgarian side CSKA Sofia following his appointment in November 2020. However, the 60-year-old has been backed to make a managerial comeback in his native London at Plough Lane.
Following Robinson's departure, an AFC Wimbledon club statement read: “The club would like to place on record its gratitude to Mark for all his hard work, loyalty and commitment whilst in this role. There will be no further statement for the time being.”
