There were joyous scenes of celebration from the touchline and Parrott hailed the goal as "one of the best moments of my life".

But former Ireland captain Keane believes the celebrations were over the top after struggling for large portions of the match.

The Manchester United legend told ITV: “It was an important win. Better late than never, but they made hard work of it.

“I think the celebrations at the end are way over the top. But an important goal, even for Parrott, he’s a young player.

“His career has probably stalled a little bit. But they kept going. Showed a bit of spirit and fight. You take that win. The feel-good factor. Keep that going. A bit of momentum.

“Honestly. That’s way over the top. For managers, staff and players. To react that way, to a friendly win. Come on! Get over it.”

Parrott could not hide his delight after netting the stunning winning goal in the 97th minute of a dour clash.

He said: “It was incredible, I’m still shaking, it’s honestly one of the best moments of my life.

“I have been shooting really well in training all week and you reap your rewards.

“It felt like the ball was never going to come down, I had to take two touches before I got the shot off. To see it hit the back of the net was crazy.

“To have that feeling maybe a mile or so away from my house is amazing.”

While his manager Stephen Kenny added: “He has exceptional technical quality to hit it with such venom and it’s not when you’re 2-0 up. The two games in which he has scored were games that were going against us.

“Those are good moment to score. He’s a terrific young man and a very popular person in the dressing room because he’s a good team-mate.”
