Thomas Meunier discusses potential Man Utd transfer - "You don't say no"

The Belgium international has done very little to distance himself from recent links touting him with a switch to Old Trafford in the summer by claiming United would be hard to turn down

Thomas Meunier has admitted it's hard to say no to clubs like Man Utd

Former Paris Saint-Germain star Thomas Meunier has only added further fuel to the rumours he is Manchester United bound in the summer with his most recent remarks.

The 30-year-old has caught the eye of some of European football's biggest clubs with his performances this term for Borussia Dortmund, with fellow Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich interested alongside Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona. Meunier has been a regular for Dortmund ever since he joined the club as a free agent back in 2020.

He has helped contribute to Marco Rose's sides efforts with two goals and five assists from 26 appearances so far this term. It was a similar story last season, which prompted Barcelona to try and lure him to the Camp Nou last summer - but Dortmund did not budge and a deal failed to materialise.

Meunier has opened up on what it was like to be the subject of interest from Barcelona in an interview with Dutch outlet Het Laatste Nieuws. "It could have been…Barcelona were looking for a reliable right-back, someone who is physically strong, complete, and can be dangerous on stagnant stages, for an acceptable price, given their financial situation.

"I fit that profile, those different conditions. That’s what I have proven this season. But when Dortmund called me about the offer they had received from Barcelona, it immediately sounded like: 'Sorry, you can’t leave'."

Meunier appears to be happy at the Signal Iduna Park, but conceded that interest from clubs of United, Barcelona and Real Madrid' stature is not something that comes about regularly.

“Imagine… Dortmund are already a big club, but Barca… That is unique. Just like Real, Bayern and United are in their way. In principle you don’t say ‘no’ to such clubs. Mentally it was not easy. But I understand Dortmund, it was barely a week before the end of the window.".

Despite the clear interest coming from Old Trafford, Meunier appears to be still somewhat hung up on what could have been in Catalonia.

"Barcelona, that’s a train that only passes once in a lifetime. I was also surprised when Jordi Cruyff called me. He explained the plan. Barca wanted to either loan me without a mandatory purchase option or immediately take me over permanently."

This is not the first time United have registered interest in the Belgian, with Meunier being linked to the red half of Manchester while he was at the Parc des Princes as a PSG player.
