What Marcel Desailly asked Virgil van Dijk after Carabao Cup final in Liverpool win

Former France captain Marcel Desailly has revealed what Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk told him after the Reds' Carabao Cup win over Chelsea

Marcel Desailly has revealed Virgil van Dijk told him he is practicing to play off two feet during Liverpool training to give himself even more of an edge over his opponents. The former captain of France spent time with Van Dijk after Liverpool's Carabao Cup win and quizzed the Dutchman.

Van Dijk is regarded as many as the best defender in the world and his return to fitness after suffering an ACL rupture back in October 2020 has been one of the reasons why Liverpool are challenging for a history-making Quadruple.

It would take a long time to find any fault with the Netherland captains game as Van Dijk looks to make himself an even better player by improving certain areas - like being able to hit those long diagonal passes with both feet.

During his peak years, World Cup winner Desailly, was regarded as one of the best of his times, and he shared his thoughts on Van Dijk on beIN SPORTS : “I was with him at the final of the League Cup,” said Desailly. “I was asking him ‘which foot do you prefer (to play with)’.

“He said that he has two feet. He has been training with it. Different era. Modern football. The defenders are talented also with the ball and their ability to play with both feet.”

Van Dijk will play a key role for Liverpool in their huge match with Manchester City on Sunday at the Etihad as the Reds look to move above their rivals in the race for the Premier League title.
