'Stuck in the past' — Manchester United fans unconvinced about Rene Meulensteen job link

Sir Alex Ferguson's former assistant has been linked with a return to Old Trafford as part of Erik ten Hag's backroom staff.

Manchester United fans aren’t too convinced at the prospect of former assistant Rene Meulensteen returning to the club.

Meulensteen — who served as one of Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching staff for six years before leaving Old Trafford in 2013 — has been linked with a return to the club as United close in on Erik ten Hag as their new manager. The MEN understand that Ajax expect their boss to make the move to the Premier League, having undergone interviews for the role two weeks ago.

Ten Hag became United’s preferred candidate last month, and looks likely to pip fellow frontrunner Mauricio Pochettino to the job. United have not yet confirmed any news surrounding their next manager, although they are aiming to make their appointment before the end of the season.

With Ten Hag seemingly on his way to Old Trafford, there has already been plenty of speculation as to who might join him on his coaching staff. Former United assistant Steve McClaren has been linked with a return, as has Meulensteen.

The 58-year-old currently works as the assistant manager of Australia’s national team, having had spells in charge of Fulham, Maccabi Haifa and Kerala Blasters since leaving Old Trafford. Like the rumours of McClaren’s return though, United fans aren’t all that convinced.

No indication has yet been given by United as to who could be joining Ten Hag in his backroom staff. Current interim boss Ralf Rangnick though is expected to move into a consultancy position, as per the terms made when he joined the club in December.
