Former West Ham star Dimitri Payet scored a sensational "Puskas-worthy" worthy goal as Marseille beat PAOK in the Europa Conference League.

Midfielder Gerson Santos da Silva opened the scoring for the hosts as crowd trouble threatened to overshadow the match at the Stade Velodrome. But Payet grabbed the headlines for himself with a brilliant effort on the stroke of half-time.

With a minute to go until the end of the first half, Marseille won a corner on the near side. Instead of crossing the ball into the box, former Leicester City man Cenzig Under opted to play it out to Payet on the edge of the D.

That proved to be an inspired decision as Payet let the ball bounce once before unleashing a ridiculous half volley that flew into the top corner of the net, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.

The strike was so good that one of the midfielder's team-mates put his hands on his head in astonishment as Payet wheeled away in celebration.

Football fans on social media were left equally as open-mouthed, with some labelling the effort a "Puskas-worthy" goal.

Derby County midfielder Ravel Morrison played with Payet during their time together at West Ham and tweeted: "OMG." Someone else commented: "Dimi’ Payet is the kind of player that people (gladly) pay the admission fee just to watch! A simply baffling/insane amount of ability."

Tens of other Twitter users shared those sentiments as Payet's incredible strike put Marseille on the brink of a place in the Europa Conference League semi-finals.

Omar el Kaddouri pulled one back for PAOK just after half-time, but it's the French giants who hold the advantage ahead of next week's second-leg.
