Aston Villa are reportedly keen on signing Germany international Matthias Ginter this summer.

Steven Gerrard is set to bolster his squad with defensive reinforcements after admitting he wants to add more "support" following the 4-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur at the weekend. That loss was the club's fourth in a row and ahead of the new campaign, Villa will be active in the transfer market.

Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has been linked to a move since January, but the latest reports claim that Gerrard could target a centre-back who is set to become a free agent in the coming months. According to Sky Sport in Germany, Villa want to sign Borussia Monchengladbach defender Ginter.

Ginter, 28, is set to leave the Bundesliga side at the end of the season and will not be signing fresh terms, according to reports. He has been linked to moves to Inter Milan and Bayern Munich, but now Villa are said to be in the race for his signature.

Sky Germany journalist Florian Plettenburg said on Twitter: "News #Ginter: Gerrard wants him! @AVFCOfficial officials have spoken to his management. But Ginter has not made a decision yet. He waits for other options."

It comes after Gerrard claimed he will delve into the market to add depth to his defensive options following the bruising defeat to Tottenham on Saturday. He said: "In the short-term we have to keep fighting and keep pushing to finish the season in the best position we can and these players need to some support and some help. "
