Liverpool legend Dirk Kuyt set for a celebrity boxing bout later this year – and is set to follow in footsteps of Patrice Evra and talkSPORT’s Jamie O’Hara

Liverpool legend Dirk Kuyt is set for a celebrity boxing bout later this year.

The 41-year-old is set to step into the ring later this year, as he becomes the latest ex-Premier League player to turn to boxing.

The former forward will follow in the footsteps of ex-Manchester United defender Patrice Evra and talkSPORT's Jamie O'Hara, who were both set to fight at the O2 Arena this month.

Kuyt will take part in the event in October, which will be led by kickboxing heavyweight champion Rico Verhoeven - but does not yet have an opponent.

He told the Humberto Talk Show: "As a former football player, I know what it’s like to be in a stadium.

"It’s been about four years since I stopped playing football. And, of course, I miss that tension and that struggle to win a match.

"I have practised many other sports, such as tennis, paddle tennis and fitness. But getting into a ring is new to me.

"So I would love to get into that battle against another celebrity. From now on I will train hard."

Kuyt may be keen to get on the undercard of the Martyn Ford vs The ‘Iranian Hulk’ if it gets rearranged.

The gigantic duo were set to meet in the ring in a headline event at the O2 on 30 April.

The event was set to feature Evra and O’Hara but it has now been cancelled.

Perhaps the Dutchman could join O'Hara and get the soles of his shoes sponsored - or is the talkSPORT man the only fighter pessimistic enough to do that?
