Wes Brown on Newcastle's 'world class' signing and Eddie Howe's revival

Wes Brown says he knew Newcastle United would stay up when the January transfer window closed. The arrival of the "world class" Kieran Trippier have the Magpies a much needed lift after the worst start to a Premier League campaign in their history.

The former Manchester United defender also highlighted the signing of Chris Wood as a "very clever signing" arriving from Burnley midway through the window. The New Zealand international has been far from prolific in front of goal, but has given the Magpies a different dynamic going forward and has the experience needed for a relegation battle.

Chronicle Live spoke with the former England international at the BT Hope United x Cybersmile event at North Shields FC, a programme run by the FA alongside BT and Cybersmile to help promote their new portal to tackle online hate. Brown said: "They've been good. Very, very good.

"I always thought with the signings [they would stay up]. Getting Chris Wood was very clever, because he's a very good player anyway. You might say he plays a certain way, but he's a threat. [Kieran] Trippier too, I know he's injured, but this guy is world class still at his age.

"I think you could see the atmosphere change straight away, even with the fans it changed the whole club. It's more positive.

"Once that happened, [the takeover] I remember saying to my mates they'll be absolutely fine. I just know that feeling, how thee club is going, in years to come, you could be talking about absolutely anyone Newcastle can buy."

Newcastle are not yet mathematically safe from relegation, but know a win over Leicester would give them a 13 point cushion, should other results go their way. The superb work done by Howe cannot go understated and Brown believes he's the type of manager who could go on to manage England.

He said: "There's still quite a lot to do but I think Eddie Howe was absolutely excellent at Bournemouth. Yes, near the end it wasn't as good. He knows what he wants from the players and I think he gets the best out of the players. At Bournemouth they had good players but he gets the best out of them every week. I think that's the best thing for a player, a manager to get the best out of the players."

"He's that sort of category [future England manager] I'm pretty sure he's younger than me! You can see he wants it [the Newcastle job]. He's worked hard and knows what he wants. The players obviously like him, from his Bournemouth and Newcastle days.

"You could see at the game the other night [against Wolves], you could see a buzz with the players. The confidence is there and that's what they've needed all season. They've relied on a few players to maybe get results but I think now it's coming from all angles."
