Bury FC 'coming back' as fans buy club and ground out of administration
Bury FC have shocked the footballing world after announcing that they were 'coming back', with their supporters buying the club - and ground Gigg Lane - out of administration
Bury FC have announced they are now out of administration.
The club tweeted a video that said that they ‘are coming back’ following their purchase of Gigg Lane and the former side’s ‘intellectual property, history, and memorabilia’.
The Shakers went into administration back in 2019 but the Greater Manchester side has now successfully taken over every facet of its former self. Having not tweeted from their official account since 2020, the club surprised everyone by writing online on Saturday: “We Are Coming Back. It is with great joy that we can say the fans have bought #BuryFC and #GiggLane out of administration and we’re working on the comeback story of a lifetime. It feels great to be with you again. #FanOwned #Bury.”
The club, who are two-time FA Cup winners, were expelled from the English Football League, of which they have been a member for 125 years, during the 2019-20 season. Following this, a bid to have the team reinstated in Sky Bet League Two for the start of 2020-21 was rejected by EFL members.
They have since been building back via a phoenix club - AFC Bury - but on Saturday, a statement issued by the club read: “After Bury Football Club Supporters’ Society successfully rallied together to buy Gigg Lane, and the intellectual property, history and memorabilia of Bury Football Club out of administration, The Shakers are finally coming back after their tragic expulsion from the English Football League in 2019."

“With the help of generous benefactors, the club is now in safe hands. Using the successful German model of 51:49 ownership, we (the Supporters’ Society) make up the 51% majority while the benefactors, Bury fans themselves, are the 49%.
“The club and stadium can never fall out of our hands again and we are now working hard to bring elite men’s football back to the town through negotiations with the FA.”
It means that Gigg Lane will be played in by the club for the first time in three years. The statement also confirmed that they would make the stadium a community place and they even asked for donations as they build for the future.
Their statement continued: "If you feel able to contribute to restoring and redeveloping Gigg Lane then we would be immensely grateful, however big or small. There are also opportunities to join us and become a member of the majority fan ownership.
"This way you can watch and take an active role helping the cause in bringing hope back to the town and local football community. This is the beginning of a very exciting return for the Shakers and we can’t wait to show you the progress over the coming year."
