Wolves player ratings vs Chelsea: Trincao proves his point as Coady keeps European dream alive

Wolverhampton Wanderers sealed a point at Chelsea after Trincao and Coady's late strikes at Stamford Bridge

Conor Coady celebrates after scoring a late equaliser against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge

Conor Coady netted a 97th minute equaliser to clinch a 2-2 draw with Chelsea and keep Wolverhampton Wanderers’ European dream alive.

Wolves trailed two-nil with 15 minutes to go at Stamford Bridge before substitute Francisco Trincao curled home to give Bruno Lage’s team hope. Coady, playing as an auxiliary centre-forward in stoppage time, then buried a header to earn Wolves a vital point.

Romelu Lukaku - who hadn’t scored a Premier League goal in 2022 - accepted two gifts in three second half minutes to put Chelsea ahead. But Wolves fought back to end a run of three straight defeats.

Jose Sa 8

Wolves rode their luck in the first half at Stamford Bridge, but Sa pulled off some great saves to keep the scores level. He also produced a brilliant stop to deny Werner at the beginning of the second half before Wolves’ defenders lost their cool.

Willy Boly 7

Boly was the only one of Wolves’ three centre-backs who didn’t make an error which led to a goal. The Ivorian wasn’t great in possession at times, but defensively he was very good.

Conor Coady 6

Coady’s afternoon wasn’t going well when the Wolves captain inexplicably handed Lukaku Chelsea’s second goal with an awful pass. But he made up for that error with a last-gasp header to clinch a deserved point.

Romain Saiss 4

Only Saiss will know how he managed to concede a penalty from the position he found himself in in the 55th minute. His performances over the past two months have taken the gloss off a really positive season for the Moroccan.

Jonny Castro Otto 6

The Spaniard returned to the team at right wing-back and managed to nullify the threat of Alonso down Chelsea’s left. Jonny combined well with right winger Chiquinho in the final 20 minutes.

Leander Dendoncker 5

Dendoncker covered a lot of ground in midfield, but he didn’t offer a great deal in possession. And he wasted a brilliant chance to score in the first half.

Ruben Neves 5

Neves’ positioning was on point as Wolves frustrated Chelsea in the first half, but his passing wasn’t as crisp as we’d expect. The Portuguese playmaker is still working his way back to fitness and needed to be replaced by Trincao for the final 15 minutes.

Joao Moutinho 7

Wolves’ veteran midfielder has struggled in recent weeks and he was nowhere near his best here before Neves went off. Moutinho helped rally his teammates in the final 10 minutes after Trincao’s goal and showed lots of aggression to drive Wolves forward.

Rayan Ait-Nouri 7

Ait-Nouri showed beautiful footwork at times down the left flank and played his part in Wolves’ strong finale. He missed a great chance shortly before half-time that he should have scored.

Pedro Neto 6

Neto was only making his second start in 12 months following a long-term absence, but he produced a much better performance than he did on his last one against Crystal Palace in March. The 22-year-old was a constant threat to Chelsea in the first half with his direct running.

Raul Jimenez 6

Jimenez came into his own in the final 20 minutes at Stamford Bridge and almost lashed home the equaliser five minutes from time. Without doubt an improvement on his last two showings.

Hwang Hee-chan (for Neto, 70) 6

Hwang was lucky not to be cautioned for an awful attempt to win a penalty. The South Korean did link well with Jimenez and Ait-Nouri in a lively cameo though.

Chiquinho (for Saiss, 70) 7

The unpredictable winger was one of the catalysts for Wolves’ victory with his superb play on the right. Chiquinho grabbed his second Premier League assist with a peach of a cross for Coady’s leveller.

Francisco Trincao (for Neves, 77) 8

Trincao led Wolves to this comeback with a stunning display off the bench. The on-loan Barcelona man had a point to prove and fired home a superb goal to give Wolves hope before playing his part in the build-up to Coady’s goal.
