Man United fans have had to put up with plenty of trolling from rivals fans this season, but few could have expected this latest swipe.

Manchester United found themselves on the end of a bizarre dig from Russian side Zenit St Petersburg on Saturday night.

United were of course left licking their wounds at the weekend following another humiliating result, having been thrashed 4-0 by Brighton. Ralf Rangnick's side were put to the sword at the Amex Stadium as their dismal season looks set to fizzle out in equally disappointing fashion.

With just one game remaining this season, United are on course for their lowest points tally in a Premier League season. Most of the club’s supporters will be eager just to see the back of the campaign, having aimed cries of ‘you’re not fit to wear the shirt’ at their players on Saturday.

United fans have no doubt had to put up with plenty of jibes from rival fans this season, such has been their demise. Having begun the campaign confident of a title challenge, they now find themselves in danger of losing a spot in the Europa League for next season.

While they would no doubt expect a fair amount of trolling from some of their league rivals, few supporters could have expected to get it from the far reaches of Eastern Europe. But that's the way it proved at the weekend.

Having secured a fourth straight league title after their 1-0 win over Khimki on Saturday, you’d have thought the Russian club would have had better things to keep them occupied in their celebrations. Instead, the club tweeted a picture of defender Danil Krugovoy holding their latest trophy with the caption: “Hey @ManUtd fans, this is what a trophy looks like!”

The dig clearly took some United fans by surprise. Some expressed their confusion at the source of the trolling, with others choosing to share pictures of the club’s sizeable trophy cabinet in response.

United will hope they can have the chance to respond in kind next season. With Erik ten Hag arriving as manager in the summer, they’ll hope they can end their wait for a piece of silverware, having last tasted success back in 2017 under Jose Mourinho.
