Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen says the club’s season has been derailed by unmotivated players who have been leaking negative stories to the media.

United reached new lows on the weekend after suffering a humiliating 4-0 defeat by Brighton. Ralf Rangnick’s side are sixth, having taken just 58 points from 37 games and are now guaranteed to record the club’s worst ever Premier League campaign.

United's previous low in the Premier League came in 2013/14 when they lost 12 games, drew seven and won 19 to finish with 64 points. With just one game left against Crystal Palace on May 22, Rangnick’s underperforming team is set to go down in United history as one of the club’s worst teams ever assembled.

Meulensteen worked underneath Sir Alex Ferguson as assistant coach from 2007 to 2013 and saw some of the best times at the club. He has slammed the current squad for their lack of commitment to the cause.

“The most important thing, when you do sign for a club, is to represent them with pride. We know some players that have come in have never really committed to the club,” he said on talkSPORT. “Then you get these rumours fed in through the media that ‘he’s not happy’ and this player or that player wants to go.

“If you’ve got a very solid dressing room and those players in the dressing room want to be there together, they want to do well together and fight for each other. But if you’ve got people in there who don’t really want to be there then you feel that. You will sense it and it has an effect on the performances.”

Rangnick took over from Ole Gunnar Solskjær in November and arrived at Old Trafford with a reputation for implementing a high-pressing style on teams. The German has failed to do so at United, who will finish a five successive season without any silverware.

“Rangnick’s impact has not brought what everyone expected, to push for the top four and Champions League is so important. They have been derailed and irritation has turned into frustration,” Meulensteen added. “When I see United play, I see a team that is lost.

"They are lost completely. There is no cohesion, no organisation, no structure, any basic thing that you need in any successful performance is not there.”
