Charlie Adam quits Dundee with poignant goodbye message as he searches for 'new challenge'

The Dens Park skipper is set to become a free agent after deciding to leave his hometown club.

Charlie Adam has announced his decision to leave Dundee.

The Dens Park skipper revealed he will move on to seek a "new challenge" when his contract expires at the end of May.

Former Rangers and Liverpool midfielder Adam admitted it's been a dream come true to play for his hometown club.

The 36-year-old helped the club win promotion back to the Premiership last season but the Dark Blues couldn't consolidate their place in the top-flight and will find themselves back in the Championship in 2022/23.

And following talks with the board, Adam decided the time was right to move on.

He wrote on Twitter: "It was always my dream to play for my hometown club and the past two years at Dundee FC have been really special for me and my family.

"To captain the club, and lead the team to promotion is something I'll always treasure and one of the highlights of my career.

"The supporters have been nothing short of incredible to me - I'll never forget how you've all treated me in the last two years.

"All that said, after talks with the directors about their future plans, I've decided to leave the club at the end of my contract this summer.

"I wish everyone at Dens Park all the best in leading Dundee back to the Premiership next season.

"As for my future I'll be looking forward to a new challenge which I'll consider over the next few weeks.

"Dundee it's been a pleasure.

"Charlie."
