Ex-Rangers flop announces retirement from the game at the age of just 33

FORMER Rangers flop striker Eduardo Herrera has announced his retirement from the game at the age of 33.

And he thanked fellow Ibrox dud, Pedro Caixinha for signing him for Rangers.

Former Rangers boss Caixinha splashed out £1.5 million to bring the nine-times-capped Mexican international to Glasgow in 2017, but the move was an expensive failure.

Herrera managed to score one league goal for Rangers during his ill-fated spell at the club - against Ross County - in 19 appearances, although 17 of them were from the bench.

He was farmed out on loan to homeland clubs Santos Laguna and Necaxa and even claimed he would have returned to Rangers to complete his final year under contract if work permit issues hadn't prevented him from returning.

Former boss Steven Gerrard made it clear he had no future at Rangers anyway and he returned home to sign for Puebla, before moving to second tier club Venados.

He's decided to retire now and stated: "I have decided to close this stage of my life as a professional football player.

"I have to thank all my teammates over the years and I learned something from everyone. I played with some great clubs.

"Thanks to Guillermo Vázquez for making my debut in Pumas and to Miguel Herrera for giving me the opportunity to represent my country and to Pedro Caixinha for giving me the confidence I needed when he signed me."

Meanwhile, Rangers star Steven Davis is being lined up by Motherwell in an ambitious move.

Davis started the Scottish Cup final at Hampden but his contract is up at Ibrox.

The 37-year-old revealed talks will start this week to see where his future lies.

He said: "I really don't know.

“We just said we'd speak after this. It's been an emotional week with the Europa League final then Jimmy Bell's funeral.

“It doesn't make up for it because it was a real good opportunity for us, but we're delighted to win this.

“I'm delighted we could finish on a high. We'll sit down next week or so and see where everything is.”
