Former attacker Dirk Kuyt has brutally stated that Liverpool’s season should be considered a failure.

The Reds slumped to a Champions League final defeat after losing to Real Madrid 1-0 at the Stade de France. Jurgen Klopp’s side had high hopes of winning an unprecedented quadruple only a week ago, but then Manchester City pulled a dramatic 3-2 comeback against Aston Villa to clinch their Premier League title for a second straight season.

Liverpool, who have already bagged the FA Cup and League Cup this campaign, had one final cup opportunity in the Champions League. But it wasn’t to be, as the La Liga giants held on to give Klopp’s side just a runners-up place.

And Kuyt said that, owing to the final loss to Los Blancos, it cannot be considered a successful season for Liverpool. The Dutchman said to RTL: “Liverpool’s season has failed. They played good football but you need to be decisive in May, and they weren’t."

“These boys played an outstanding season. The two competitions we couldn’t win, we didn’t for the smallest possible margin: one point, 1-0. City during the [Premier League] season, they were one point better and tonight Madrid was one goal better."

But the German boss has insisted that the side are stronger than they were when they lost the final in 2018. "That says nothing about us," he continued. "The difference between 2018 and now is that I see us coming again. In 2018, I wished it but I couldn’t know. But these boys are really competitive, they have an incredible attitude.

“It is a fantastic group. We will go again, definitely. Tomorrow we will celebrate the season. It is good we don’t have to do that immediately but after a night’s sleep and maybe another speech from me, the boys will realise how special it was what we did. Even if nobody on this planet would understand we have a parade tomorrow, we still will do it. "
