Scotland fans are all saying the same thing after Celtic hero Anthony Ralston enjoys star turn at Hampden

ANTHONY RALSTON made his mark for Scotland last night, bagging the opening goal in the 2-0 Nations League win over Armenia.

The Celtic star was handed his first international start by Steve Clarke and put in a tremendous shift at right back, being named man of the match.

The 23-year old's header on 28 minutes set Clarke's men on their way to victory, going at least a little way to easing the pain after last week's World Cup heartbreak against Ukraine.

His big national team moment caps off a remarkable career resurgence over the past year for Ralston.

After finding himself frozen out at Parkhead and being loaned out elsewhere, it looked like his time in Glasgow's east end could be coming to a close.

But how quickly things can change in football!

Ange Postecoglou quickly identified Ralston as a man who could play in his free-flowing, attack-minded system and the defender has never looked back.

29 appearances, 5 goals, a league title and a League Cup triumph have followed since the Aussie's appointment as Celtic boss.

His club form caught the attention of Scotland boss Clarke, and Ralston was called up for the first time in November, making his debut as a late sub in the crunch qualifier against Denmark.

Before last night, that was his only national team appearance.

That all changed against Armenia, when he was handed his big moment.

With Nathan Patterson battling back from an injury, a chance opened up in the right back area.

Aaron Hickey was given that responsibility in the Ukraine defeat, and the Bologna youngster struggled.

Against Armenia, however, Ralston excelled, landing the man of the match award after a stellar 76 minutes.

The Celtic man's performance had fans all saying the same thing - he should have been given the nod against Ukraine, too!

Many supporters also reckon his showing was good enough to lay claim to the right back slot long term.

One fan responded to the Scotland tweet naming him man of the match saying: "Best player on the park. Should have played vs. Ukraine. Best right back we have now."

Another added: "Got to be automatic first choice."

A third said: "He was excellent - should keep the jersey now."

Another fan said: "Should have played last week."

A Celtic supporter in the replies couldn't hide their delight at Ralston's showing on the national stage, saying: "What a turnaround for this player. Outstanding performance."

Patterson replaced Ralston for the final 14 minutes at Hampden, and will be in contention to play in the next Nations League clash against the Republic of Ireland in Dublin on Saturday.

After that, it's a trip to once again face Armenia on Wednesday.
