Everton have announced that they have released a number of first team players ahead of the 2022/23 season, including midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson.

The former Iceland international spent five years on Merseyside having signed for a club-record fee from Swansea City back in 2017. He racked up 156 appearances in total for the Toffees, playing his final game for the club in May 2021.

Everton have also released Fabien Delph, Cenk Tosun and Jonjoe Kenny as manager Frank Lampard begins ringing the changes ahead of his first full season in charge. They have however renewed deals with goalkeeper Asmir Begovic and Andy Lonergan, while negotiations with Lewis Gibson are still ongoing.

Sigurdsson, Delph and Tosun cost Everton a combined total of £82 million, and the fact that they've all left for nothing demonstrates how badly Everton have been mismanaged in the transfer marker over the past few years.

They've have spent an eye-watering £557 million on players since 2016 and have ploughed through eight different managers in that time, only to find themselves narrowly avoiding relegation last month

Delph, who joined from Manchester City in 2019, has struggled with injuries over the past couple of seasons and only managed to make 41 appearances for the club, while Tosun, who joined from Besiktas in 2017, has been an unmitigated disaster.

The Turkey international only managed a measly 11 goals in five years and featured just 10 times for the club since 2020. He also spent time on loan at Crystal Palace and back at Besiktas while still on Everton's books.

Having arrived at Goodison Park on deadline back in January, Lampard hasn't had the chance to properly mould Everton in his image, despite managing to get last minute moves for Dele Ali and Donny van de Beek - who has returned to parent club Manchester United - over the line.

With a couple of new gaps in midfield to plug, the club are reportedly eying a move to Brentford star Christian Eriksen, whose short-term contract with the Bees expires at the end of the month.
