Blackburn Rovers have announced the appointment of former Newcastle United striker Jon Dahl Tomasson as their manager. He has replaced Tony Mowbray who left at the end of the season following the expiration of his contract.

Tomasson will arrive in the North-west with very brief knowledge of England and English football having spent a year on Tyneside between July 1997 and July 1998. Although, during those 12 months, he didn’t achieve what he might have hoped as his time with the Magpies was the least profitable of his career.

On the back of successful spells in his native Denmark and then in the Netherlands, he scored just four goals in 35 games in all competitions for United. Mitigating factors such as the ankle injury suffered by Alan Shearer and the same-day exit of Les Ferdinand to Tottenham meant Tomasson was played in a position unfamiliar to him.

The 112-time Denmark international left Newcastle for Feyenoord where he re-found his form before a move to AC Milan brought a host of silverware. Upon retiring, on the back of a return to Feyenoord, he went into coaching where he worked his way up to the Malmo job. In both of his full seasons with the Swedish giants, he led them to the Allsvenskan title before leaving at the end of 2021.

QPR and Hibernian were a couple of the sides linked with appointing Tomasson coming into this summer but it was Blackburn who ultimately made him their head coach. In their statement to announce his arrival, the Championship side confirmed that he had agreed a three-year deal.
