AID-ING TO LEITH?

Hibs boss Lee Johnson breaks silence on Aiden McGeady transfer move as he opens up on ‘maverick’ ex-Celtic star

LEE JOHNSON reckons Jair Tavares can take the Premiership by storm.

And the Hibs boss is hoping fellow winger Aiden McGeady will also light up the top flight next season.

Johnson snapped up Tavares on a long-term deal from Benfica this week.

Now he has turned his attention to persuading ex-Hoops star McGeady to be part of his Easter Road revolution

The pair worked together when Johnson was in charge at Sunderland and remain close.

Johnson said: “I have got a strong relationship with Aiden, he is a fantastic player with unbelievable feet.

“He gets to the corner of the box then often there’s an assist or a shot at goal.

“He is 36 so whether it’s us or anyone else he has nothing to prove but a lot to prove as well.

“ He is a maverick, he is a challenging but inspiring character to have in your squad.

“And whoever gets Aiden McGeady for a year or two will have an exceptional player and person.”

Hibs supporters are guaranteed to see Tavares in action and Johnson is confident the 21-year-old will blow them away.

He said: “Jair can be really exciting. That’s a really interesting one as you never know how foreign players are going to adapt to Scottish football.

“It’s unique with the passion of the fans, the weather, the locations and variation of game on game quality.

“You have a young lad brought up in a Portuguese system and played most of the international age groups.

“Benfica are renowned for developing quality technical players and he’s an athlete as well.

“So a little bit of a win in terms of the contract scenario we capitalised on through information and a player I have tracked since my Bristol City days.

“So one we are looking forward to seeing if he can light up the ground and get fans off their seats.”

Elsewhere, the fixture schedule for the upcoming SPFL season has been revealed.

Teams now know their opponents up until April, when the Premiership splits.
