Dorking Wanderers have been slammed on social media for calling a former player the "Pikey Pirlo" after he completed his move to Chesterfield.

Darren Oldaker's departure from Dorking had been confirmed earlier this month, with his move to fellow National League side Chesterfield confirmed by the Spireites on Sunday.

Following their announcement, Dorking quote tweeted the post on their official account and wrote: “Good luck to the ‘Pikey Pirlo’ in his new venture. See you soon Darren.”

The tweet has since been deleted following significant backlash which saw it accumulate over 180 quote tweets and replies from hundreds more Twitter users.

Oldaker joined Dorking from Hythe Town in November last year and went on to make 25 appearances for the club, scoring four goals.

The 23-year-old midfielder was also referred to as the "Pikey Pirlo" in a piece about departing players that was posted on the club's website earlier this month, according to FanBanter.co.uk.

Written by Dorking co-founder, chairman and manager Marc White, the word "pikey" is said to have since been removed from the article on the website.

The original piece read: "Darren Oldaker is moving on to pastures new. I love 11, he reminds me of the lads that played for us during our first few years, he is a real character and I know that he will remain close to the club.

"On the field he was unbelievable, he could do things that no one else could. Every opposition manager tried to stop him but failed, he glided through games.

"Similar to Dan [Lincoln] he came in at the perfect time for us and played a pivotal role in our success, the ‘Pikey Pirlo’ will be missed on another level!"

Dorking gained promotion to the fifth tier of English football for the first time in the club's history last season, reaching the National League after beating Ebbsfleet United 3-2 after extra-time in the National League South play-off final in May.
