Benjamin Siegrist reveals Celtic spectator role on nightmare Champions League night as opens up on Euro dream

The former Dundee United man was paraded at Parkhead and revealed his part on one of the Hoops most disappointing Euro nights.

Keeper Ben Siegrist has signed a four-year deal with the champions to become Celtics second signing of the close season.

Benjamin Siegrist has revealed how he witnessed one of Celtic’s biggest Champions League nightmares as a kid but now the Swiss shot-stopper says it’s a dream to have the chance to play for them in Europe’s premier competition.

Siegrist was paraded at Parkhead after the former Dundee United keeper penned a four-year deal at the Hoops. And the 30-year-old told how he he was a ball boy for FC Basel when they knocked Celtic out at the qualifiers in 2002. Leading 3-1 from the first leg, Martin O’Neill’s side lost 2-0 in the return to go out on away goals but they dropped into the UEFA Cup in the year they reached the final in Seville.

Ange Postecoglou’s men won’t need nerve-shredding qualifiers this time around as they go straight into the group stage. And Siegrist would love to play his part as he challenges Joe Hart for the No. 1 spot. He said of his move: “It’s a boyhood dream.

“I was telling the people earlier when I was young I was a ball boy with my first team, FC Basel. I was a ball boy behind Rab Douglas. Unfortunately for us Basel knocked out out but I was there in the stadium. But obviously to hear the Champions League anthem and be involved in the Champions League with this club is amazing.”
