MIDDLESBROUGH have named free agent Tommy Smith in their starting side for this afternoon's opening pre-season friendly at Bishop Auckland.

Smith is a free agent following his release from Stoke City at the end of last season, and has been training with Chris Wilder's first-team squad this week.

The 30-year-old right-back spent six years with Huddersfield Town, making 200 senior appearances for the Terriers.

He joined Stoke in 2019, and made 33 appearances for the Potters in all competitions last season.

Boro are in the market for a right-back to provide competition to Isaiah Jones, with Djed Spence expected to complete a move to Tottenham imminently.
