Everton 'in talks' to face Celtic in Sydney Super Cup as Rangers replacement hunt escalates

The tournament suffered a blow when the Ibrox side pulled out of the chance to face their great rivals in a glamour friendly Down Under.

Premier League side Everton are in talks to replace Rangers and face Celtic in the Sydney Super Cup - according to a report.

The tournament suffered a blow when the Ibrox side pulled out of the chance to face their great rivals in glamour friendly Down Under. But now Australian outlet Kick360 claim Frank Lampard's side are in the driving seat to secure a clash upon Ange Postecoglou 's homecoming. The Celtic boss is revered for his work with the national team, which included qualification for two consecutive World Cups and winning the Asian Cup in 2015.

A solution has been sought since the prospect of Glasgow's big two squaring off in the 83,500 seater Accor Stadium hit the buffers. Rangers had a change of heart amid a fierce backlash from their own support - which led to a tennis ball protest before and during their Premiership win over Dundee in March.

But now an alternative solution appears to be nearing with the Toffees set to take on the Premiership champions. A statement appeared on the landing page for the Sydney Super Cup on Sunday night, which stated: "History will be made in Sydney this November in the newly created Sydney Super Cup. Updated details to be announced soon!"

The tournament is due to take place between November 16 and 20.
