Lee Bowyer breaks silence on Birmingham City exit and sends message to BSHL

Lee Bowyer has released a statement following his departure from Birmingham City.

Bowyer left Blues over the weekend after guiding the club to a 20th-placed finish in the Championship in his only full season in charge. He returned to Blues as manager in March 2021 and helped the club stave off relegation in his first campaign.

Results deteriorated in the second half of last season though and Bowyer’s future had been the subject of intense speculation months before his departure. Mark Warburton was rumoured to be lined up as a replacement before John Eustace - who worked as Warburton’s assistant at QPR - was given the top job at St Andrew’s.

In a statement released via the League Managers Association, Bowyer wished his successor well and thanked Blues’ board for their support during his tenure. He said: “I would like to thank the chairman and board of directors for giving me the opportunity to manage Birmingham City Football Club. I had good memories of my time as a player and it has been a pleasure to return as the manager.

Birmingham City eye move for Newcastle duo who are training with under-23s

Birmingham City are interested in Newcastle duo Dwight Gayle and Ciaran Clark as John Eustace looks to strengthen his squad ahead of next season.

Gayle and Clark have started to train with the Magpies' under-23s team as they edge towards the exit door at St James' Park, this summer. The Magpies boss Eddie Howe has more than 30 senior players at his disposal for pre-season and there is indication he will need to trim the squad down with more incomings of Nick Pope, Matt Targett and Sven Botman.

According to The Daily Mail, the club is willing to let the pair go out on loan initially, given Gayle still has two years left on his current deal. With that said, both Gayle and Clark have rarely featured for Howe last season.
