Football fans were left fuming as Sky Sports News switched from their usual coverage to show Boris Johnson's resignation speech.

Reports emerged on Thursday morning that Johnson would resign as Conservative party leader following a tumultuous few days in Downing Street. And as Bozo the Clown emerged from the doors of No.10 at around 12:30pm to tender his resignation, football fans could have been forgiven for thinking there would have been some solace away from politics on Sky Sports News.

But those looking to escape Johnson's final act as Prime Minister were left sorely disappointed as the sports channel also decided to show his leaving speech, along with all the major news stations.

Watchers of Sky Sports News couldn't quite understand why their viewing experience was being interrupted by Johnson's farewell.

"Didn't think I'd be watching Boris Johnson announcing his resignation on Sky Sports news but here we are," wrote one. As another commented: "There's something deeply apocalyptic about a timer counting down to Transfer Deadline Day as Boris Johnson resigns live on Sky Sports News."

A third person wrote: "They're showing Boris Johnson on Sky Sports News, we're through the looking glass now." As a different user complained: "Ffs even sky sports news have gone to Downing Street."

Once Boris had finished with his speech, Sky Sports returned to their usual programming with the news that Premier League outfit Leeds have signed Colombian winger Luis Sinisterra.

Whites fans will be hoping that the 23-year-old lasts longer at Elland Road than Boris did in Downing Street. The bumbling buffoon (that's Boris, not Sinisterra) is just about on course to last longer than his predecessor Theresa May, but only if he survives until the Autumn.

The 58-year-old has indicated that he will stay on until a new Conservative leader is found - a process which could take a number of months. Whether the party will stand for that after the events of recent days is anyone's guess.
