Boris Johnson has been told that his cabinet is as empty as Tottenham Hotspur's after 51 resignations in 48 hours.

A spate of resignations from Johnson's government, starting on Tuesday, forced the prime minister to resign as Conservative party leader on Thursday, although he will remain prime minister until a successor is chosen. Amongst those to quit their roles within Johnson's cabinet were chancellor Rishi Sunak and health secretary Sajid Javid.

The exodus of cabinet members from government saw fans draw comparisons to the lack of trophies in Spurs' trophy cabinet after their lengthy wait to get their hands on some silverware.

One fan mocked Johnson and Spurs after his resignation as they tweeted: "BoJo had to go in the end. His cabinet was as empty as Tottenham Hotspur's."

Spurs have been the subject of ridicule from fans of their Premier League in recent seasons having gone 14 years without a major trophy. The club's last piece of silverware came in 2008, when they won the League Cup for the fourth time in their history by beating Chelsea in extra-time.

Despite reaching three different cup finals since, Spurs have failed to add to their trophy haul, meaning they remain on 13 major honours.

The comparisons between his and Tottenham's trophy cabinets is not the first time the world of football has been attached to Johnson's exit from Number 10.

Spurs' London rivals Chelsea even suggested manager Thomas Tuchel should replace Johnson as prime minister. Meanwhile, some fans dubbed Johnson the Ralf Rangnick of politics after his delayed resignation announcement.

The comparisons to the German manager come from Rangnick's tenure as interim manager at Manchester United last season, with pundits regularly suggesting the players did not respect their temporary boss.

Comparisons have therefore been drawn to Johnson, who will remain as prime minister until a replacement is selected, despite the resignations of multiple cabinet members and the apparent lack of confidence in him as a leader.
