Legendary 1966 World Cup winning England captain Sir Bobby Moore would have been slated by modern day scouts as he was “not good in the air” and “couldn’t run” according to Harry Redknapp.

The West Ham legend is enshrined in English footballing heritage after captaining England to their one and only World Cup triumph in 1966. As well as leading the Three Lions to that historic 4-2 victory over West Germany at Wembley, Moore also spent 16 years at the Boleyn Ground, lifting the FA Cup with the Hammers in 1964.

Iconic videos of Moore lifting the Jules Rimet trophy and pinching the ball of Pele’s toes continue to be rolled out today as the country continues to reflect on those wonderful footballing memories. However, former Tottenham Hotspur boss Harry Redknapp, believes his former teammate may not have had quite the impact on the modern day football scout.

“Bobby was amazing, there was no one like Moore,” Redknapp said to the ‘Pub Talk’ podcast. “Bobby loved a night out, he was one of the boys.

“But if you’d have gone and watched him play and I said ‘there’s a fella at West Ham, go and have a look at him, he plays at the back, give me a report’. It would be like, ‘Is he quick? No, he can’t run. Good in the air? No, not good in the air.

“‘How big is he? Five foot, eleven and a half, just shy of six foot nearly’.” Fortunately for Redknapp, he was able to admire Moore’s brilliance on a first hand basis.

Redknapp played alongside Moore at the Boleyn Ground between 1972 and 1972. And while the 75-year-old said Moore’s physical attributes may have left some to be desired, the England legend’s reading of the game was faultless.

“But he read the game, didn’t he,” Redknapp added. “He used to go right up to the centre forward, and then they would jump up to flick the ball on as if they were beating him.

“But he would drop off ten yards and control it on his chest.”
