‘That won’t be happening’ – ex-Celtic star Leigh Griffiths move considered by SPFL club but boss PULLS THE PLUG

LEIGH GRIFFITHS has been on the hunt for a new club since his Falkirk spell came to an end.

The former Scotland striker was released by Celtic in January with six months left on his deal after signing a one-year extension at Parkhead.

After a loan spell with his ex-club Dundee, he then joined Falkrik in a short-term deal after rejecting a contract at Dens Park until the end of last season.

Griffiths then joined the Bairns on a reported £1500 a week deal but he failed to deliver for the League One side up and has been a free agent since.

And League Two side Forfar were interested in making a move for the 31-year-old, according to boss Gary Irvine.

The pair played together at Dundee during Griffiths' first spell at the club and they have continued to stay in touch and are close pals.

Irvine has revealed that he had his eyes on the former Celtic man this season, but insists he's now no longer interested after looking elsewhere for other attacking options.

He also admitted that Griffiths would be too good for League Two football, if he does manage to get back to full fitness.

He said: “We gave it a thought but that was a good few weeks down the line.

“Since then, I’ve moved on and got my attacking options in now.

“That won’t be happening.

“Sparky is a good friend of myself and Jeebs.

“He is a top player, just a couple of years ago he was still one of the main strikers in Scotland.

“If Leigh gets himself back to fitness he is probably above our level, if I’m honest.”

The striker recently opened up on his lonely pre-season without a club and has shown how hard he's worked in the gym to get back to his best.

Griffiths has been on a strict six day a week boxing regime and admitted he wished he focused this much on his fitness earlier in his career, as he has been this summer.

He believes he's nearly in the best shape of his life and he's now determined to make a return to action.

And the forward recently urged managers to take a chance on him as he reckons he's still a top level player.

But no move for the ex-Celtic goalscorer has materialised and he's still without a contract ahead of the new league seasons, which get underway in the next couple of weeks.
